Give your fans something to share: How to get pinned on pinterest

It is no surprise that Pinterest has people talking about the potential for using it as a marketing tool for your business. People like Pinterest, it is fun and pretty and kind of zen compared to the noise of the other social platforms.

Your ideal clients & customers might like Pinterest; in fact they may be pinning your stuff already. This means it’s important for you to make your content “pinnable” and representing your brand as best it can on the wonderful world of Pinterest.

Get Pinned on Pinterest

Adding the Pinterest Pin-It Button plug in to your site is a very good first step – when you give people permission to pin images from your site, and you make it easy for them by including the button, you are increasing the chances that your fans will help you spread the word about your business using this popular platform.

But what happens when you don’t have images to pin?

Blogs are traditionally written articles, and if you are using a blog as part of your business strategy (and I totally think you should!) then you are likely sharing excellent written content that your people will love. Since Pinterest is as much a visual bookmarking tool as it is a sharing tool, people will want to pin your blog posts.

If you do not include images in your posts the only images that are available to pin are your website banner or possibly some ads from other businesses. Hopefully people aren’t pinning ads or logos from other businesses. Talk about taking the zen out of Pinterest. Just as bad are people pinning banner images. Pinterest squashes those banners and makes them look terrible on the Pinterest wall.

Zen be gone and repins be damned.

So what is a blogger to do?

Here are a few ideas that will help you give your readers something worth pinning:

  • source out free images for your blog
  • showcase one item from your online shop
  • create your own images & graphics using one of the many free tools available online
  • make use of reader submitted photos (Instagram is a great, fun app for this!)
  • extract a take away message from your article and use that to make a quote graphic

Bonus Tip
Having a great image and having the pin it button ready for readers still isn’t everything you need to make the most of using Pinterest for your biz. The pretty images on Pinterest will certainly help with brand recognition but what really turns pinners into buyers is when they click on an image to visit your site.

If you really want to maximize the power of Pinterest the key is not just getting visitors to pin images from your site, but getting the rest of Pinterest to click-through that image to see more!

Try using free online software to add text to your images, such as:

  • a teaser message “would you love to know how to…”
  • how your info benefits the reader “save time and money with these 3 steps”
  • a call to action “click this image to find out how”

(Note: if you are using stock photos be sure to check the terms of use, adding text is considered editing.)

Remember, when people pin something from your site those images are circulating for everyone to see, representing your brand. So even if you, yourself are not into Pinterest, it is worth checking to see what has been pinned from your site and how your brand looks up on the Pinterest wall.

The Pin Potential

If you aren’t including images worth pinning on your blog, people may just walk away without pinning or sharing anything at all. So follow the steps above and give your fans something to pin about.
